All of us at one time or another have faced some kind of discouragement. Maybe it’s a wayward child, a bad diagnosis, or a broken promise from a trusted friend. It could even be an unanswered prayer. Whatever your situation is, I want to encourage you today with the Word of God.
First off, all things are subject to change. However change does not just happen on it’s own. It happens when we pray and give things to God so he can then work in those particular situations. Sometimes people say, “Well, yes, I’ve done that and nothing has changed.”
Let me address that. It’s true, sometimes we do pray and nothing “seems” to change in the natural. But my comeback to that is this, it’s not over till it’s over. In other words, if you are still living and trusting and believing don’t quit! Know this, if you prayed and you prayed in faith, it is working. Things can change if you don’t give up. Hebrews says it’s through faith and patience that we obtain the promises of God.
I love what the Apostle Paul said in the book of Ephesians, chapter six. He was admonishing the believers to put on the whole armor of God so that they could stand firm against the strategies of the devil due to the spiritual battle going on. One of his strategies is discouragement. If you don’t stand strong in His mighty power, you are not going to win! He emphasizes the importance of standing. “Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore…” (Ephesians 6:13,14) NKJV Further down from this verse he says, “Pray with all manner (types) of prayer”. Prayer is key, and spirit-led prayer is of foremost importance as well as praying in the Spirit to keep yourself built up and out of the realm of discouragement. (Jude 20, Ephesians 6:18)
A familiar story is found in 1 Samuel 30. David had just returned to his city of Ziklag only to find that the enemy forces had burned it down and run off with all the women and children in the town, including David’s. All this had taken place while David and his men were away at war. After a time of sorrow and grieving over there losses, the men that had been with him wanted to stone him and kill him. David however encouraged, and strengthened himself in the Lord and inquired what he should do. He was specific and God was specific back. I love what he said in 1 Samuel 30:8, “Shall I pursue this troop? Shall I overtake them?” And He answered him, “Pursue, for you shall surely overtake them and without fail recover all.” NKJV
Wow. Go for it David! God basically gave him the encouragement to keep going, telling him, he would win and recover all! He was also letting him know that He would be behind him. So David fearlessly gathered his troops together to go after the enemy and take their family members back. And he did. He not only retrieved the women and children, but all their goods that were wrongfully taken and on top of that a great bounty. “And nothing of theirs was lacking, either small or great, sons or daughters, spoil or anything which they had taken from them; David recovered all.”1 Samuel 30:19. I love that! Nothing was lacking! He recovered all! And God wants you to recover all!
What has the enemy stolen from you? What are you going to do about it? Are you just going to stay in your place of sorrow and discouragement or are you going to put on your fighting clothes and go after your peace, joy and whatever else the enemy has stolen from you? Come on, get up and get going! You can do it! With God on your side you cannot fail!
Here are some action steps you can do if you are in a place of discouragement:
- What questions are you asking the Lord and what strategies is he giving you? (Jeremiah 29:11-13)
- Are you listening and doing what He says to you? (John 10:27-28)
- Have you encouraged yourself in the Lord? (Psalm 42:5)
- Have you given him every care or are you carrying burdens you’re not meant to carry? (1 Peter 5:7; Matthew 11:28-30)
- Have you actually prayed and do you have the Word to back up what you are asking for? (John15:7)
Do the above things and you will find the encouragement you need! Be strengthened today in Gods mighty power!
Josh 1:8-9 Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do. This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged.
